"Perles, coraux & requins"

Julien Gasc is a discreet but influential figure on the independent music scene. Over the decades, he has established himself as a unique voice in French psychedelic rock, combining melodic elegance, surrealist poetry, and sound experimentation. A talented multi-instrumentalist, he is best known for his solo work, as well as for founding and participating in the free rock, far-out jazz, and experimental pop band Aquaserge. Gasc joined Stereolab as a keyboardist and backing vocalist for their 2008-2009 world tour, and continues to work with members Laetitia Sadier, Tim Gane, and Sean O'Hagan. In 2013, Julien launched his solo career with the album Cerf, biche et faon on the Born Bad label, an intimate and dreamlike record. His new album, produced and recorded in Berlin with Anton Newcombe of The Brian Jonestown Massacre, was finally released on the 5th of September 2025. Whether writing for himself or others, he charts his own course, true to his artistic standards and unique sensibility.

Over the past twenty years, in addition to his solo career, Julien Gasc made brief stints in Stereolab and Hyperclean. Most notably, Gasc was a core member of Aquaserge, a French outfit that walks a fine line between crunchy grooves and avant tangents. On his own, Gasc slowly approaches his own style of tight and streamlined songwriting, creating classic pop songs. Following his second outing ’Kiss Me, You Fool!’, a groove-laden record with beautiful psychedelic moments, Gasc’s third album ‘L’Appel De La Forêt’ granted more of an open space to nuanced melodic turns. On ‘Re Eff’, he drifts even further from Aquaserge’s sound, embracing an intimate, chanson feeling. He returns to the low-key affair in 2024 with ‘Grand jardin.’ Composing the disc’s nine themes on the piano over the course of a weekend, the casual 17-minute escapade bleeds like what it is—a dusky summer respite. - Aquarium Drunkard
